Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Discharge and Swollen Eyes/Nose UD page 4 Its myxi

Wise Old Thumper
Hi all,

We will be taking our bunny to the vets tonight tonight but in the meantime, I thought I would ask here.

I went out this afternoon to see Buttercup with lots of discharge coming from her nose, her nose looked swollen and a little dark too (but that could be her fur colouring as she is white with a few dark patches/spots anyway). I stroked her nose to see how it felt and it felt hard with a spiky bit coming out of it. Possibly a piece of hay or splinter caught there?

Then noticed her right eye is also very gunky and swollen red too.

I've checked genitals, there is no swelling there. She is eating and pooing and came out for a run.

She is vaccinated against VHD, VHD2 and Myxi.

Thanks. Feeling very worried!

Thank you Jane, she will be off to the vets shortly so hopefully we will get some answers.

Will update later x

Thanks for all the lovely vibes, much appreciated.

So DH took Buttercup to the vets, who was very thorough but aware of his limitations with the latest knowledge etc. He said her eye is presenting as a classic eye infection, so has given some injected antibiotics and oral antibiotics for us to continue with at home. He has also given an anti-inflammatory pain relief injection, and further pain relief for us to give to her daily. He is concerned about the discharge from her nose - it could be snuffles, there could be tooth root problems, there could be abscess or a tumour - and what all the symptoms are secondary to. He doesn't think myxi because she is eating, drinking, pooing, lively enough etc. But he does want us to get a second opinion somewhere else so we will be getting an appointment with Molly Varga or Marie Kubiak at Manor Vets (but he wasn't sure if Marie Kubiak was still there). We will phone tomorrow for an appointment.

Thanks everyone. The two bunnies we have now have been so healthy for the last couple of years that looking after poorly bunnies seems a long time ago. I really hope this is something easily treatable. x

Yes I hope so too :)

It sounds like your vet is covering all bases, which is good.

It's a really good idea to get a referral, and a second opinion. That will save an awful lot of time in the long run :D

Marie isn't at MVs any more, she is still based in the Midlands and doing Freelance work I think. Molly is stil at MVs and you will be in expert hands with her. Sending lots move vibes for Buttercup xx

Thank you Jane, our vet suspected she might not be there anymore but wasn't sure. Its good to know Molly Varga is there but unfortunately she isn't available this week so we are seeing another vet there who is an exotics specialist and apparently very good. So fingers crossed. Thank you for the vibes.

How did you get on with phoning for an appointment with a specialist?

We have an appointment for Friday afternoon, DH is taking a half day from work to take her over. Thankfully she is still fine in herself, enjoyed some pear this afternoon and her eye looks ever so slightly better. The shape and look of her nose still doesn't look right to me, but its so hard to know. I am pretty sure they will do x-rays on Friday on a high-spec machine so that may tell us more.

Thanks everyone.

I'm glad that Buttercup is well within herself at the moment and I hope the appointment on Friday goes well xx
