Rabbit proofing hedges?

We are in the process of purchasing a house which down the left hand side has a lovely mature hedge. Now we have a hare that has to be free ranged he will no way be confined but im very reluctant to put up a fence.

Is there anyway I can rabbit proof the hedge? Has anyone done this? I thought maybe putting some thick cement mesh inside the hedge and letting the hedge grow round it? Any ideas would be appreciated!

I did think about doing that. I'd have to inbed it into the soil somehow?

Yes: getting it through or past the roots would be problematic, depending on what type of hedge it is!

Hmmm how about making a fence just inside the hedge and letting the hedge grow over it in time? A weld mesh fence, dug into the ground.
