Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Strange Growths on Ears and Nose

Hello Rabbit Lovers

A friend recused a rabbit from a kindergarten, where it wasn't being looked after well. She's gone on holiday and left the rabbit with us for 6 weeks, as we have our own rabbit.

The rescued rabbit was in need of some TLC when it arrived. It's now developed some growths on its ears and nose... It's fur isn't looking great yet. If's not falling how, but just not nice and shiny. Looks a bit scraggy on the legs. (It has been weeing in it's bed though,so perhaps just needs a bit of a clearner environment?)

For some reason, I can't upload the image and the code won't show. So here's a link to the ears photo:

So, a couple of worrying questions:-
a) Is the rabbit ok? Or does action need to be taken?
b) Is this going to be something that our rabbit has caught? And do we need to do anything to stop our rabbit ending up looking the same?

Thank you for all your rabbity help! It's much appreciated!

The Rabbit needs to be seen by a Vet ASAP. If they bits on the ears are actual lumps it could be myxomatosis. Are you in the UK ?

Can you post a photo of the Rabbit’s nose, myxo nodules usually appear on the ears, nose and around the mouth and eyes.Check the Rabbits genitals. If it’s myxomatosis the genitals are likely to be very swollen. From the photo of the ears I am not convinced it’s myxo but it might be.

It’s essential to quarantine the Rabbit well away from your own and to be scrupulous with hygiene when handling your own Rabbit after handling the other Rabbit.

If the bits on the ears are not lumps as such, but clumps of dead skin and fur the Rabbit could have been in a fight with another Rabbit and sustained injuries which have caused the tissue to die off and fall off. Hence the ears look very scraggy along the edges.

A photo of the nose would be helpful, but the most important thing is to seek veterinary attention from a vet ASAP and to keep the Rabbit well away from your own one.

Also, if the Rabbit is very soiled he/she is at very high risk of flystrike
