Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Big rabbit fur problem

Hi,

We have a large rabbit. 7.5kg.

I think he has walking dandruff. He is constantly itchy, has weird patches of fur and has flakes and horrible parts in his skin. I have bought some spot on treatment which says I need to give him 1 pipette for each 750g. That means he needs 10 pippettes. The packet says to drip it on the back of his neck. Obviously with 10 portions, I will quickly run out of room. Should I put a few on at each time or put all ten on his spine in one go? I don't want him to be able to lick it but I also don't want the dose to be ineffective.

Thanks.

I think it might be a good idea to consult a Vet. Firstly to obtain a definitive diagnosis and if it is Cheyletiellosis ('walking dandruff) then treatment can be given by subcutaneous injection -(Ivermectin-0.4 mg/kg by subcutaneous injection every 10-14 days for three doses.)
