Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Long haired rabbits

Hi,

I'm new to this forum so not sure where to post this.

I have a double-maned lionhead rabbit who is very long haired and I feel like I am constantly battling with matts in her fur. I took her to the vet a couple weeks ago and they tried to shave her but she was getting very stressed so they said to make an additional appointment where she would be sedated and shaved. - I haven't had time or transport to do this yet.

How can I keep her matt free?

I have considered selling her to someone who will have the time and knowledge to deal with her but she is living with her sister who looks fully lionhead and I don't know if I can bear to seperate them.
What would you do?

The image is her and her sister. She is the fluffier one.

Oh bless her, she is fluffy isn't she. Personally, I would make the vet appointment, get her clipped and then keep her clipped. You'll just need to invest some time in getting her used to clippers so that you can keep the fur under control. Failing that, invest the same time in training her to accept being groomed. Long haired bunnies require a lot of work but it can be very rewarding. It would be a shame to separate them :(.

She's beautiful. I think she needs to get used to daily grooming I'm afraid. Is she really fluffy underneath too? If so clipping would definitely be easier.

I would go for the clip option too and invest in some rounded ended scissors to keep her bottom and face trimmed.

Training her to be groomed sounds a good plan too. Tamsin has a link about getting rabbits used to being handled. Hopefully someone knows how to find it. It is a long process but once they are ok to be handled it will be well worth it.
