Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urine infection?

Cassie has been on septrin since last Saturday for a suspected urine infection (she has strong smelling wee and is wet at times underneath) and 0.5ml of dog metacam a day in case of inflammation. She is eating and pooping OK.

The vet said it was OK to give her the metacam and about 0.5ml of dog one. The metacam bottle I had from when she had her dental did say 1ml. I have been giving her 0.5ml once a day. I am wondering if that is enough to reduce any inflammation or whether I should ask the vet if we can up her dose for a couple of days to the max 1ml (she weighs 2.5kg).

Not sure what next steps will be on Tuesday as the Septrin/0.5ml metacam does not seem to have cleared it. We could maybe panacur (she was done in the summer and also had panomec) her again and send a sample off.

Would bloods/x-ray/water sample be next step?

I would say bloods and urine samples are the next step. Panacur ma also be an option but if it was me, I'd probably want the results back before trying the panacur. Others will treat as a precaution but since she was done recently, I would hold off.

As for the metacam, I think 0.5mls is fine..but I always give two doses a day. However, since she doesn't seem to be in pain perhaps this would be ok. I would ask the vet if you can split the dose and their thoughts on this.

I hope you get to the bottom of it. Hopefully she just needs a different antibiotic, or a longer dose. :thumb:

I am wondering if bladder sludge may be an issue for her ? Has she ever passed sludgy wee ? How much water does she drink and has this increased recently ?

As she is already on abx you'd need to wait about 48 hours to get a urine sample to send off for analysis in order to obtain a reliable result. An abdominal Xray would show any signs of bladder sludge and a blood profile would identify any problems with renal function, amongst other things.

Hope the Vet can help xx

Thank you for your replies. I had not realised that we would have to wait 48 hrs for a sample so will do that. Our vet can normally do conscious x-rays to that could be an option to rule it out but it did look cloudy the other day so definitely an option and if it is that they could sort her out the same day.

She drinks a fair amount of water but no more than usual seems to be gone.

It may be worth mentioning that she has been eating a lot of grass lately (more than normal). Could this have any affect?

My poor little girl, a dental about a month ago, stopping eating two weeks ago and now this started last week. She is such a little cutie and has been good as gold with all her meds (she is a septrin and metacam junky  )
