  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Infected tear duct advice please!

It looks as though Albert has an infected tear duct (clear/white discharge). He's eating normally, pooing normally, moving around normally, doesn't seem to be in any pain. I can't feel any unusual lumps or bumps. But he is 12 years old.

I'm going to call the vets this morning to see if I can get an appointment. My question is, would it be classed as an emergency??? If I can't get an appointment until Monday, would the best thing be to bathe it with cooled boiled water? This is what I did last night when I first noticed it and it does look a bit better this morning, just not completely gone.

Could he have had something caught in his eye, and bathing it helped remove it?

I hope you get an appointment this morning. If not, I would think he would be able to wait, if he is otherwise ok. Perhaps you could speak to a vet to see what they think?

I would bathe with cooled boiled water until you can get an appointment. Hope he's okay.

I would echo what others have said. You could always call the vet for some advice and we always find bathing with boiled cold water helps our rabbit who gets recurrent eye infections. She has a rolling prescription but they go pretty fast if we bathe her eye three times a day too.

Hope Albert feels better soon.

Thanks for the replies everyone! I've got an appointment in half an hour so hopefully it'll just be a case of antibiotics. :)
