  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

When to neuter giants? FAO giant owners

How old were your giants when you got them neutered?

I was told by the vet to wait 10-12 months for my giants to be neutered so that they were fully grown.

My Contis were neutered by a very experienced rabbit vet (she had done hundreds of spays for a rescue) at about 8 months, but only because I didn't get them much before that and they needed vaccinating first. The vet would have preferred them spayed first (but I hadn't found her at that point) and they were in fact full of hormones by that point and she was surprised they weren't fighting more. She would have no problem neutering at 6 months but she did say she was glad she was doing it rather than an inexperienced rabbit vet.

Interesting.

I waited the full 10-12 months before getting my two done. I guess my vet was just being cautious which is a good thing. But I had a feeling 6 months + would be fine. Not that it matters now :p
