  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Hello, I'm sorry I have no advice but I'm sure some of our very experienced members will be on soon to help you. I am so sorry the poor little thing is in such a bad way xx

Hello

I am sorry to hear about your poor Rabbit  It sounds as though he has a systemic infection and obviously this is very serious. In my opinion he is likely to need IV antibiotics as given orally they may not achieve a sufficient concentration in the blood stream to address such a wide spread infection.

It is difficult to give you more specific advice without knowing the exact situation with regards to his clinical condition. Also, it is possible that his internal organs are effected by the infection, especially his lungs.

Rabbits can recover from this type of illness, but the prognosis is guarded and treatment needs to be aggressive and often ongoing for several months.
I do hope that the poor chap can pull through.

Sending him lots of vibes, I hope he can recover from this x

I would contact your vet and mention what Jane has said about the possible treatment.

Excellent advice from jacks Jane - just to clarify in case you are knew to bunny meds - IV means intraveneous - ie injected .
You may need a vet to do this and I suggest you also start a new thread in Rabbit Health or Rabbit Chat asking for a good 'exotics' (ie rabbit) vet close to where you are.

I hope he gets well soon. Is your vets an exotic pet specialist and have they run tests to establish exactly what it is. My specialist always keeps Doughnut in when she's poorly and look after her so hopefully yours is doing the same.

Good luck, and good for you for rescuing him.
