  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Slightly smelly bunny

I'm starting to wonder if I'm just paranoid.

I've noticed in the last day or so Poppy has a faint odour about her which I haven't noticed before. I'm guessing Its urine. Thing is her bum, feet and tail are dry and I've seen her go in the litter tray. She also still stretches out etc and doesn't seem in pain.

She's eating, but as I reported in another thread has gone completely off hay. Teeth were checked by the vet when she was in overnight during the week for a minor case of bloat and found no problems.

I've been getting lots of licks and bunny kisses since she came back so maybe I'm botching her scent more but I wondered if it could be an infection. Or do buns smell a bit as reach sexual maturity? She's coming up to 4 months old.

Urine odour can change as a Rabbit reaches puberty. It is usually much more evident in Bucks than Does. However it really depends on what the smell is actually like. If it resembles a sort of sweet 'farmyard' smell that could be indicative of a gastrointestinal problem- coccidiosis. Given her change in eating habits and her recent episode of bloat I would not totally exclude the possibility of coccidiosis and I would contact the Vet again for advice.
