  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

I know this section is for rabbit health, but the only other place I could put this is in the general chat section, and this is a bit more urgent than that.
My guinea pig I'm pretty sure has a UTI. Even though she is acting normally, there is blood in her urine. My parents won't allow me to take her to the vet, even though I have enough money for it. So I guess my question is, is there anything at all I could do to treat her UTI at home? Also, if anyone has been here before and taken their pet to the vet, approximately how much would the medication cost, Bactrim?
Thanks in advance....

No - your g/pig needs to go to the vet urgently. She will be in pain from the UTI - if that is what it is - but you need to see your vet for a diagnosis and treatment.

You say your parents won't allow you to take her to the vet - why?

It's illegal to deny veterinary care to an animal that needs it, in the UK at least. Why will they not provide treatment to a sick animal?

We have never really had good experience with any clinic we've been too. Any time we went for our dog, it has cost over a hundred dollars, and my parents would have to help pay for. They are not too sure about taking a guinea pig ( which I understand, but I have been working all summer and have earned enough money ). How long is too long to wait for a UTI? The first time I noticed blood in her urine was maybe a day and a half ago. I'll try to convince my parents. Is this fatal if left untreated?

I don't know how fatal Utis are in guinea pigs, however, have you ever had one? They are excruciatingly painful so it is cruel to keep your pet in pain. There is no reason to not take any animal to the vet, none are worth 'less' than others. And a day and a half is quite a bit of time. A vet will also not give any prescription meds without seeing the animal, especially given that dosages are based off weight. There are also stories online about gallstones and bladder stones presenting in the same manner, so piggy really needs to go.

Suffice to say that your g/pig is ill and in pain, whether it is a UTI or something else. You need to take to the vet, it is cruel not to.

If you have the money can you get somebody else to take you? Or get a taxi or bus?

I hope your guinea gets help soon.

You need to tell your parents that it's an offence not to take your guinea pig to the vet if it is suffering, not to mention cruel. If you are under 16 then they are legally responsible for paying the vet bills if you cannot

I can understand your concern. Is there a US focuses guinea pig forum or rescue near by that could recommend a vet, so you knew they were good. Otherwise you could call a couple of local vets and ask them if they have anyone that specialises in small animals/sees guinea pigs. Also ask them for a quote for how much it will cost. That might reassure your parents. Otherwise can you hop on a bus?

Thank you all so much for your help and concern! She's starting to get grumpy (not wanting me to touch her, clicking her teeth at me, etc. ) so I think she really is hurting right now, poor thing :( But, I finally got permission to take her to the vet! We're going tomorrow:thumb: Thank you again!

Poor piggy is in a lot of pain by the sound of it. :(

I really would advise you to take her today, it is cruel to leave her in pain and she has been in pain for too long already. :(
