  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Age or Under Nourished

We adopted Tigger via Gumtree. He was advertised as free to good home and needing to go quickly – turns out his previous owners had acquired a dog the day before placing the ad.

Anyway when we collected him we were told he was 9 months old. He is a harlequin lop. He felt quite thin when I picked him up and when we got home I weighed him. He was 1.6kg (the same weight as our netherland dwarf).

I checked his bits to make sure he was male and noticed he was not showing as fully developed (if you know what I mean).

We took him to the vets for a check up and they said he was a little thin and more like 4 months old.

Within 2 weeks Tiggers weight increased by 0.2Kg and his boy bits appeared.

Now my question is – is this just timing / age (and previous owners were wrong about getting him in January) or is it likely we was underfed?

Proper diet and nourishment is important for good health. It's good to be part of this discussion. Anyhow thanks to all here for nice input.

It could be that bad nutrition delayed his growth and development. On the other hand it doesn't sound like his previous owners were the most reliable of people so they could just have the dates wrong. Or a combination of the two.

You could try posting a pic ;)
