  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Mites

Smoo gets mites every time she moults. :?

Just checked her and she has definite ear mites and a bit of crispy dried skin on her back. :(

Ringing the vets tomorrow but I'm just wondering what treatments there are. Usually I mention it while I'm there and she gets an injection, but for once I don't need to go for anything else :)shock: I know I'm scared too). It's a very long journey, usually about six hours from when I leave until I get back home. One I don't want to stress her out and two I'm really not feeling up to it myself right now. So the vets know her weight etc. and she's only just been up, can they send me something to use? Her ear is the worst. :(

Otherwise I think I might have to go to one of the closer vets just for my sake, so I need to know what I'm asking for. :thumb:

I've had no dealings with mites fortunately so don't know a lot about treatments but I'd just like to send some vibes for Smoo, I hope she's mite free soon.

Can you phone your vets and ask them to tell you what to ask for? I think she might get a steroid ear drop to reduce the inflamation. Parsley had something starting with a c, when his ear infection was bad.

Canaural probably

BUT I would not want to be putting anything directly into the ear canals without first being as sure as I can be that the eardrums are intact

A course of ivermectin injections usually gets ride of mites

I've spoken to the receptionist and a vet will ring me back, although it's getting a bit late now... Anyway they *might* be able to send me the injection. How would you feel about doing it yourself? I've given them penicillin injections every three days for years now, is it just the same?
