Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

E.Cuniculi Disinfecting Questions

sonnet

Alpha Buck
Dylan is being treated for suspected E.Cuniculi (with Panacur begun yesterday). I've since learnt that you also need to disinfect all bunny areas. However...can you do this with any other product apart from bleach?

I'm very concerned about using bleach - apart from it being very strong I'm worried that if it's not rinsed enough afterwards that it will be dangerous. Although litter trays etc are easy enough to do, I haven't a clue how I'd attempt to clean Dylan's hutch and the cabin that it is set within - how do you know you've completely rinsed bleach off wood for example? :?

If there is nothing else I can use what % should bleach:water be?

Also how do I protect myself aside from thoroughly washing my hands after contact with Dylan & his things?

Any help appreciated!

It's a 10 % bleach solution on days 8? and 21? Can never be sure!

Wash your hands, wear an apron.

Bleach clean all cleaning tools on those days too and in between keep clean, sweep up and discard sweepings etc.

Wash everything with the bleach solution that could have come in to contact with bunny urine, remember that could be on bars, up walls etc.

Beg, steal or borrow a steam cleaner if you wish but I don't think there will be a problem with the bleach solution at the right dilution, in a well ventilated area, rinse and let dry before returning buns.

Not sure if you can use Milton - Jane will know.

A 10% bleach solution and thorough rinsing will be fine. I use it regularly here. Have done for years and never had any issues

The 'EC Bleach Cleaning' needs to be done on days 21 and 28 of treatment.

Is your Rabbit on a non steroidal anti inflammatory eg Metacam ? Controlling the cellular inflammatory response to erupting EC spores is essential to try to minimise longterm cellular damage. Panacur will not 'cure EC', it will simply reduce the number of EC spores within the bloodstream. The whole point of treatment is to try to minimise the damage (inflammation) the EC spores cause as they erupt into the cells of various body organs-eg the central nervous system and kidneys. So by reducing the number of spores (with Panacur) and reducing the cellular inflammatory response ( with Metacam)

There is an good article about EC here, it was written by an Exotics Specialist, Elisabetta Mancinelli who now works at the Rabbit Clinic at the University of Edinburgh.
