Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Hair cut / nail cut

Hi all just two quick questions

When is a suitable time to get teeth/ nails trimmed?

When if at all is a good time for a hair cut, Poppy is looking a bit long haired on the top of his head and has some little tufts around his tail, they aren't dirty or anything but I was wondering if he needs a little trim?

They don't need dentals unless the teeth are overgrowing to the point of causing pain or difficulty eating - is this the case? If not, no need to put them through GA. If it is, phone your vet and get them booked in ASAP.

Nails should be done as and when needed - are they getting too long for them to walk comfortably? Too long and it forces them to put more pressure than is comfortable on the back feet, which can then cause sore hocks. They should be around the same length as the fur on the toes. Typically I only do a nail trim every three months or so, they just don't grow that fast.

As for a haircut, unless they're dirty it's not necessary, but it certainly wouldn't do any harm to take off some extra long bits if that's what you want to do.

Don't assume all rabbits need their nails trimming. I have had rabbits for many years and have never needed to trim any rabbits nails :)
