  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Spay questions

I have been waiting for an indoor pen to arrive before I booked my girls in for their spay. It has now arrived. I know they stay inside overnight after it but I have a few questions. With the weather being so cold (snow warnings for this weekend) will they be okay to go back out the next day or will they still have trouble keeping warm for a few days afterwards? I heard not to use straw as bedding after a spay but I am worried that if I book them in now it will be hard to keep them warm without using it.
Secondly they sometimes nip each other if they get in the others way (not nastily and never have pulled fur or drawn blood) but if one gets the other on the stomach could it cause problems wih the stitches? Am I allowed to ask the vet to use glue instead?
I guess I am just worrying a bit but I need to know whether it is a safe time to get them done.

Personally I would postpone it til the extremely cold weather passes. I would not feel happy putting them back outside in snow and sub zero temperatures 24 hours after major abdominal surgery.

Thanks for replying :) I will probably wait then I wouldn't want to put them in danger. Out of interest what temp do you think I should wait for it to rise to? Will be below zero until atleast the end of January so would it be worth waiting until mid Feb or early March when the danger will have passed completely?

That is what I would do, yes :)

Agree with Jane. I wasn't happy letting my two out of my sight until I knew the wound was healing well. They both stayed in the living room where I could watch them for three or four days.
