Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Peritonitis in Bunny

Ocelot

Young Bun
Hello, my foster bunny (who is named 'Bunny') has been on anti-biotics for 6 weeks. I took him in to the vets because he was sneezing and the day before I took him in he had mucus stools - this was just for that one day. With the anti-biotics he has stopped sneezing, his stools have been fine all the rest of the time.

I had him tested for everything and the only thing that has shown up is peritonitis. He has now had 3 xrays over the past 6 weeks and the stomach is pretty much in view again and the intestines are starting to be more visible - in other words, it seems to be improving.

As we cannot put down the ill-health to anything else the vet recommended operating as this is the only way to find out what is actually the problem and also clear up the peritonitis. As Bunny is improving steadily and is clearly happy and healthy (apart from the xray evidence) I have decided to give it a bit more time and continue with anti-biotics and do another xray in a few weeks and see if we need to operate then. But I have never come across this before so am hoping you can share your experiences.

The other thing to mention is that when I first took him in the vet said he was dangerously under-weight. He had been that weight since June when I started feeding him less (on vet's suggestion) which had a good effect on my other bunny who needed to lose weight, my other vet had seen Bunny at this weight and not been concerned at all. I have now been feeding him more again and he has put the weight back on and is in a very good state now. He hates me giving him the antibiotics, but I am managing. I stopped for a couple of days last week because it seemed to be causing him stress, but then it seemed he was in a bit of pain and not happy so I started it again and he immediately improved.

Thank you for listening. :)

I have never heard of peritonitis being diagnosed by Xrays :? I didn't think it was possible :? I could be wrong, I am not a Vet/Doctor.

Has the Vet run any blood tests ?

Personally I would want to consider seeking a second opinion from a specialist and I would certainly not want to opt for abdominal surgery for Bunny until a specialist had been consulted.

I agree with this.

We have run every blood test and nothing showed up. My vet did suggest one way forward was to go see a specialist: he suggested 3 options: go see a rabbit specialist who will run more expensive tests and probably come back with it being peritonitis and then I have to have an op, have an op now, or keep doing anti-biotics and see how he does. I chose that latter as Bunny seems so healthy and well and the xrays are looking better. The xray shows the muck in the belly. It was so cloudy in there that you could not see the stomach outline at all in the first xray. now you can see the stomach and the rest is clearing a bit. But I don't know enough about Peritonitis to know if it does clear itself. I don't think I can justify seeing a specialist as he is in really good health, apart from the xray looking cloudy.
Do you know more about peritonitis?
Thank you,
