  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Ceftazidine: Parsley's latest experimental drug!

parsnipbun

Wise Old Thumper
After his bulla op two weeks ago we were hoping for an all clear - but two swellings have come up - one in a lymph node and one under the ear.

Yesterday he had a small op. to take out the node and the swelling.

The swelling was pus again and has been kept open for flushing twice a day, the node was unfortunately not pus and has been sent to histology (Parsley is on a vaccine course against melanoma so we are of course concerned that the vaccine has not worked and the melanoma has spread/metastisised).

Culture indicated that the only possible drug for the present pus is Ceftazidine - injected IM every 8 hours - so we are on 9am/5pm/1am cycle for the next 5 days . .

Its not a common drug for rabbits as far as anyone knows so the 8 hr is a tad guesswork based on the usual round of calls to all the rabbit specialists . . .

We now need several Christmas miracles - the antibiotic to work, the pus and all other infection to go away, the node NOT to be cancer spreading, and the non regenerative anaemia that he is suffering from as a result of long term infection to also put itself right.

Parsley himself is of course nomming for England as ever and currently doing a flop in front of the fire! But the vet feels that we should not put him through more ops if this does not finally solve things so its pretty important we get those miracles.
