  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Crusty red bottom!

I just had a very quick inspection of Poppy's lady bits and I noticed that between her vagina and her tail, she had a red mark (looks like a sore hock almost) and on closer inspection, I can feel that it's a bit scabby and hard under her fur.

I've made a vets appointment but can't get one today...do you think I should put sudocrem on it? Or should I just leave it alone?

She's slim, very clean (although a bit smelly, I think I need to clean her sweat glands), eating and pooing perfectly and is her usual lively self other than that so I'm not overly worried...do you think she may have just been bitten whist humping Albert's face or something? :?

If it was a bite it could be an abscess. But without being able to see it it's impossible to say for certain.

Do be vigilant re flystrike.

Just texted Leanne, who had them last week and she said that she had been nursing Poppy because Albert had had enough of being humped and lashed out at her...so I can relax. They're just war wounds that sudocrem will fix! :)

Sounds like some bonding activities or rebonding might be in order if they are wounds.

As Jane said, be extra careful about flystrike. I had a pony once who got a wound that flies then laid maggots in, it was horrific.
