Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Dettol - help!

Hi,

I've not been well and a friend has just been helping me out by cleaning Ada's cage.

When I mentioned how I cleaned it one of the things I mentioned was "pet disinfectant" and I figured she would come and ask me where it was at that stage of the cleaning process. But I smelt Dettol and hoped it was coming from somewhere else, like the neighbour cleaning their drive or car, but my friend had cleaned the cage with Dettol as she hadn't heard the "pet" part.

She's rinsing it out lots, but I'm concerned that this may not be enough. Will I have to chuck it? Will it be days or weeks before it's safe for a rabbit to use it again?

Tbf, i'd of thought rinsing it out with boiling hot water several times and leaving it to dry would be sufficient?

I use dettol wipes in the bunny shed, have done since we've had them - figured if its safe for babies its ok for the bunnies???

I find pet disinfectant is ****

Exactly - people dettol babies high chairs that they then eat food off, so as long as it's rinsed and dried it should be ok for a bunny.

We followed your advice, she's had the dry cage, full of hay, back for several hours and she seems fine.

Thanks :)
