  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Shivering Bunny :(

Sugarbun

New Kit
My un-neutered (soon to be) 18 month old Angora/Netherland albino cross has been sleeping a lot today, which is normal, but I noticed she was shivering. She let me pick her up and carried on trembling in my arms. She also was not as responsive as usual, not jumping around to loud noises. She's usually very wiggly, but she let me wrap her in a blanket. Ears were a normal temp, and she's getting up and about now but is still shaking a bit. She refused a carrot (her favourite) and perked up after some water. Is it possible that she was just really cold? I live in South Africa and today it's sunny but chilly. She's been inside the flat with us today. Nibbled some straw and seems ok now. Any ideas what was wrong with her?

Shivering can be a sign of severe pain. As can food refusal. Your Rabbit needs urgent Veterinary attention so I would get in touch with your Vet now.

If she was shivering but stopped, and started eating again after I warmed the room up, could it be that she was just cold? Sorry for the stupid question, but she's my first bun..

It is impossible to say what caused what. Pain (in any form) will cause a drop in body temperature, anorexia and in some cases shivering.

To ascertain what may be going on for your Rabbit an examination by a Vet is needed.

go to the vets straight away, the only experience I have personally with a shivering bunny is when me bunny had trapped gas and was in extreme pain, it was awful to see. Just be on the safe side, get it checked out xx
