Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Can anyone describe ...

Wise Old Thumper
poo worms in a rabbit?

Long story short; had to take Thumper to the vet this morning as she was not behaving like herself - kept lying down like she did about a month ago. Vet has prescribed metacam, baytril and panacur. Have force-fed all 3 (including Coco for the panacur) without getting scratched and/or bitten :thumb: but my question arises from this:

My daughter came in to the kitchen saying she'd found a worm on Thumper's belly. It was no longer than a grain of rice, very very thin, quite pale almost translucent and wriggling about like I dunno what.

So, does anyone know if this is a bunny poo-worm or just a grub?

I won't hold you to it of course, but it just might answer why she's not herself again.

Thanks!

Sounds like a maggot. You need to check her thoroughly and take her to the vet immediately if there are any more.

A maggot? oh crikey! Might get my daughter on it actually - Thumper doesn't like me getting too close as she thinks I'm going to pounce and pick her up.

We'll have a look, thanks.

Sounds like a maggot to me too.

You need to thoroughly check your bunny for any others.

This sounds like flystrike which is horrible and in many cases if not treated in time can cause a very painful, distressing and disgusting death for the bunny.

I hope this is not the case. Fingers crossed.

Following a very thorough check by my 8 year old daughter - who without prompting said she moved all the fur so she could see down to the skin - she could not see any more.

We will obviously check regularly (do anyway) and I'll also be on poo check from now on, just to see if any come out. Nice. Can barely wait.
