  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

vet in Chelmsford area??

Is there a good rabbit vet in Chelmsford area? My older rabbit needs his teeth filing down n where he is booked in is rubbish I took my new rabbit there and they didn't even mention neutering..again! They have said his teeth will cost £130 is this a normal price? I don't know if I should let them do it, is it a basic procedure? He needs it done ASAP as he is dribbling which I read is a sign of pain? but they didn't seem to see the urgency? :(

Where have you been going? I use companion care in chelmer village (ask to see Sam or simone) which i think is the best practice locally.?.although sods law suggests you're now going to say this is where you have been going  simone used to do my santa's dentals right up until she was about 8 and she always recovered well, and I know she burrs them right down to just above the gum to help give them a better chance of growing back in the right shape. £130 sounds about right for a decent thorough dental, I think I used to pay abut £90 but that was a couple of years back.

Yep companion care in chelmer village  lol I havnt a clue who I saw I will double check when I get back but if they are good like you say I'll go ahead with them, it's just so confusing for me as this is the first problem I've had in 5 years with my bun and the more I read online about vets the more confusing it gets reading about 'rabbit savvy vets' etc... Maybe I should stop googling it every 5 minutes

All vets at that surgery are not equal, so I'd also be interested to know who you saw. Maybe PM either Santa or me?

Can you remember which vet you saw - can you remember if she had an accent (new Zealand,Scottish or local), roughly how old, long/short/brown/blonde hair etc? If you can remember any of these details I could probably work out which vet you saw

I wouldn't necessarily write them off as not bunny savvy just because they haven't mentioned neutering to you, while it might be a good idea to recommend it, ultimately it is an elective procedure so knowing the owner simone, it wouldn't surprise me if they don't 'push' it for fear of it looking like the hard sell rather than customer choice - so they wait for you to ask. But they are perfectly competent at doing it, I've had loads of my own and foster buns neutered there over the years with no problems.

I don't think any vets in chelmsford are bunny specialists as such - the nearest is probably William Lewis in upminster, but I find Sam in particular at companion care to be a very good general bunny vet and she is happy to ring William for advice if she isn't sure about anything so for me it is a good compromise. Simone is also very good with bunnies, the other three I'm less sure on, I usually just ask for Sam  good luck x x

I'd agree with that. I wouldn't think it is Simone's style to push neutering. Doesn't mean that they don't recommend it as such though.

I'll have a look when I get home and PM to let you know :) I never thought they were rubbish till I stared reading online and people say if they don't mention neutering etc.. I really know little about vets and have just gone by what I've read and seen online but you both seem to really recommend them so I'm going to keep the appointment, my dogs go to them and my cat was PTS there without any problems, it's just reading online about 'rabbit savvy'

I think when it comes to local vets, as Santa said, there are no real specialists that are local, so you need a vet that is happy to either refer or take advice from one when they need to. And the best bit about Companion Care is that they are open 7 days a week.

Yeah I wouldn't fancy having to rush far if there was ever an emergency and there is another vet near to me which is extortionate prices!

I want to say you where right, have seen Sam and she has been fantastic!!!!!! Cannot express how she's the nicest vet ive seen lol

Yippee! Great stuff. :) If you can't get to see Sam at any time, try Simone (unless she was the vet you didn't rate before, of course! :D)

I'm so pleased :) and I will do, it wasn't Simone I see before it was a different one who suggested a full dental without even looking in his mouth, Sam had a good look and even put a finger in lol and he had his teeth spur sorted this morning and he's eatin so much already :D back on Monday for check up :)
