Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Pneumonia

Anybody know anything about Pneumonia in rabbits or fliud on the lungs?

Bramble has just been giving a chest xray and they think there is a problem with his lungs, which maybe either fluid or Pneumonia.

Fluid on the lungs is often symptomatic of a heart problem and can be treated with diuretics (furosemide usually). One of my rats was on it for the last 9 months of his life. If pneumonia is suspected then you'll need antibiotics because that is a bacterial infection.

If it's pneumonia it could technically be caused by pasteurella. I don't know whether that makes a difference but I imagine it'd be less serious than "real" pneumonia (caused by different bacteria). But that's difficult to determine I guess. How is he in himself, is he active and eating etc.?

If this has been brewing, this might account for the odd behaviour and excess caecals.

I'm sorry he isn't well. I can't add anything else but i hope they can make him happy at worst, and better at best.

He is absolutely fine in himself, eating well, and we even got a binky last night. He has no discharge from his nose or eyes, so I think the vewt has ruled out Pasterella, but I didn't know puemonia could be caused by pasterella.

Pneumonia is potentially serious, regardless of what bacteria are involved. There are two forms of Pneumonia, acute and chronic.

Back to the vets with Bramble tomorrow morning.

He is being treated with Baytril at the moment....having to mash it with banana as he finds the syringe feeding so stressful.

The vet has not ruled out a heart condition, and he may have to have a heart scan. They were going to speak to the heart specialist, so hopefully I may find out more tomorrow.

My main worry at the moment is that Bramble and Bungee are going into boarding this weekend. I know that they will be well looked after by Jayne and she will continue with his meds, but I hate to leave him. I would cancel if it was just a show we were going to this weekend, but we are trading so I can't really not go.....it's going to be a stressful weekend

we have an elderly nethie with chronic lung issues and very little functioning lung left due to pasturella before we got her. She does get fluidy and her nasal passages get full as well -

everyone thought she would only last a few weeks when first diagnosed - she is still here about 4 years later!

every now and again it flares up and we try abx etc - but it settles down again almost regardless of what we try.

One of my old bunnies had chronic pneumonia and was successfully treated with Zithromax on successive occasions. Sadly, each bout caused more and more scarring on her lungs and she eventually passed from it BUT the Zithromax was brilliant stuff. WAY better than Baytril. It's not licensed for bunnies but many bunny savvy vets will prescribe off-license. In fact, my bunny vet prescribes it for most URIs in the bunnies and piggles.

Aww thank you

Bramble is having a heart scan on Tuesday, just to hopefully rule out any problems in that area. If it is definatley pneumonia then I will mention Zithromax to the vet, as the Baytril appears to be having no effect

aww bless him. Good Luck little Bramble. Hope you can get some meds which can sort this. Keep fighting!

Bramble got on okay thank you. His heart scan showed that everything looks okay in that department, which is a relief....heart no bigger than it should be and valves all look fine.

They are just concerned about his lungs and airways....hopefully just an infection, but they haven't ruled out something more serious, although they can't actually see anything there at the moment. He has new antibiotics...Septrin, which I think may be a children's medicine.

He is bright and happy in himself, eating and pooping like crazy! They shaved a bit of fur on his side, and he looks a little funny, but still my lovely bun
