  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Flea treatment

How often do you deflea or worm your bunnies?? I am just asking out of curiosity really.

And also what you use?? I have used flea stuff before on mine, I always was told frontline. But then my vet said that frontline is harmful to rabbits and gave me advantage. But now I can't seem to find it in any shops.

I never do it. Would only use flea treatment if there were actually fleas, wouldn't use it as a precaution.

As for the worming, would be the same, would do it if I felt I needed to, but not as a precaution.

same with me :)

I don't even like defleaing or deworming dogs and cats unless really necessary and i'd always try to deflea the organic way like using diatomaceous earth, Fleabusters, Richards Organic Flea and Tick Shampoo, apple cider vinegar, etc. Too many animals get bad reactions from flea medications.

Never use frontline on a rabbit it will kill them. Advantage is the only safe flea treatment. Up until recently you need a prescription for advantage but now you can get it with out from VetUK

Advantage still isn't safe, there's lots of information on the internet of cats and dogs with bad reactions to it, even death. Imidacloprid is the active ingredient and it's a carcinogen (possibly human carcinogen too), neurotoxin, can cause organ damage and other things. It's safer than other flea treatments though.
