  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Help me to understand how my bunny died?

I posted pictures in the past few months of my bunny, Clyde. I was asking what kind of rabbit he was. I thank you all again for your help.

Today I went to feed him and his cage-mate, his son. I did not see his nose pop out of nowhere like I am so used to, so I peeked in and saw him laying stretched out. I called him and had a treat in my hand and he still did not come, so I knew the worst had happened.

I am unaware of any health problems he may have been having. He has been a lazy bunny who liked to lay spread out in his cage. When he was let out, he didn't run amok like the other bunnies.

However, he had 2 litters of bunnies and 2/3 of the second litter died. I took the last bunny from the second litter to the vet and he told me that it was likely low blood sugar. One of the bunnies looked as if he was having a seizure.

I did not want to face touching another dead bunny, so my roommate picked him up and put him in a box. She said that she seen some foam near his mouth. I do not know what could have happened. He had no wounds, or blood or anything so I know his cage-mate (his son) did not hurt him.

If you have any ideas, please let me know.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

Sadly, there are 101 things that could have caused this. The only way to know for sure is to get a post mortem done on him.

Please ensure to quarantine his bonded mate though in case it is anything catching.

That varies vet to vet so it might be worth giving your vet a call, but they can only do it if the body has been kept cool, so if it hasn't, then they may not be able to.
