Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Blood in urine

Bea & Floss

Mama Doe
I've been looking for info online about blood in rabbits urine and really haven't found much at all. Most sites are presuming worried owners are just seeing the normal orange/red colour urine goes with oxidation or by eating certain foods and not true blood, so I haven't found out much at all.

Floss is peeing blood and quite a lot of it, the blood is spread throughout her urine and there are a few small clots too. In herself she is bright and active and eating well.

She is booked into the vets tomorrow, she has already had a course of antibiotics and panacur a few weeks ago for the same problem, it went away and now is back. She has a history of EC and urinary incontinence. Poor floss :(

Has anyone had the same and have any advice to give?

I have no personal experience of haematuria but if there is that much blood, or in fact any at all, and it is definitely not discoloured urine, I would want her seen by a vet today. x

It's not a new thing, shes had it before and I've spoken to the vet and they've said to restart her antibiotics and they'll see her tomorrow(as long as she is bright happy and eating well, which she is :))

Flossie is now in the vets for the day, she's going to have an ultrasound and some bloods taken and perhaps her bladder flushed. He dipsticked a urine sample and it had a ton of blood in it but we could see that just by looking, also he could feel that one of her kidneys is enlarged.

Hopefully we may have a clearer idea of where the blood is coming from (bladder or kidneys) later today. Poor Flossie fluffett :(

Had an update from the vet and initial bloods are fine no sign of kidney damage(although he did say kidneys can take a real hammering before they show up on blood tests) kidneys look fine on the x ray too. he struggled to get a decent ultrasound image of the bladder so is going to try again later, if he still can't he might do a conscious x-ray instead.

Flossie came home tonight, all they found was anemia from losing quite a lot of blood but they don't know the cause? She's on antibiotics for 2 weeks and we've got to go back next week and then decide what course of action to take depending on how she is.

The vet commented on what a model patient she was, she was pulled around, poked and jabbed without any fuss at all (she is always such a good girl :))

Tonight she is whizzing around the run obviously glad to be home :D

I hope her problems disappear soon poor little bunny. Good to hear she's still her normal self in every ither way. Lots of vibes that the antibitics do their job.x.x.

sending her loads of recovery vibes, glad she is eating and acting normal and whizzing about her run:love: lotsa vibes xxx
