Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Lost Fur

TriL1

Hi, my bunny Tipsy had her HVD vac last week, the day I went out to find she had lost the size of a 2pence piece of fur. Id phoned the vets who said it could be that she may have pulled it out, if I was worried I could bring her in, anyway I phoned back and another lady said just to keep an eye on her, if there was a lump it could mean she has had a reaction otherwise not. Well there wasnt a lump or swollen so I just kept an eye on her, it didnt get any worse so I didnt go to the vet. Where the hair has come out (either fallen out or pulled out), it has now scabbed over, is this normal or should I go to the vet asap?:?

Sounds like a reaction to the vaccine to me. Assume the hair loss is at the vaccine site?

I'd keep an eye on it to make sure no abcess forms (if this happens you will see swelling and redness beneath the scab) Wouldn't do any harm to bathe it with a mix of cooled salt water.

Hi thanks for your reply. Yeah its at the vacine site.xx It was a bit bloody from where the hair had gone and now its scabbed over its dried bloody scabs?? It doesnt seem to be swollen just raised a bit from where its scabby? I've just put some salt water on.

Yes, looks exactly like the reaction my Foster bun Dennis had. It took ages to heal. He came to me when it was nearly better, but I'm pretty sure the rescue had him checked over by the vet.

I think if it was my bun I would get a check over just to ease your mind. But hopefully it will just be that. x

thanks very much for your reply, i'll phone vet tomorrow. Amazing how badly they can react to an injection. It was the cylap one, i'll go to my other vet next time as they used Lapinject on my first bun and had no probs. Wasnt till this that heard alot of bad reports about it. Poor little bun, she seems her usual self but still doesnt look fantastic. xxx Thanks again for your help.xx:wave:
