  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Sore hocks:(

I've been so stupid.:cry: I can't believe I haven't noticed it sooner. All four bunnies have little matched of red on their hocks.:cry:

Every few months I trim round Bells back feet because she has so much fur there they just matt and catch all the the poo and dirt, so I was doing that today, and was just looking around at her feet and she has a small patch of redness on both feet at her heel. Then I rushed to check the other three, Walnut has small circles too, but Pepsi has a circle and a sort of a little line and Feebee has roughly the same as Pepsi. I can't believe I never spotted it before.
I do all over health checks quite often but have never really looked around at their feet really well, I just look at them but dont pull over the fur, and the redness on all of them is under a layer of fur.:cry:

My mum isn't home at the moment, my aunt is with us, but when she gets home I'm going to talk to her about it and then hopefully make a vet appointment to have all their hocks checked out more.

I'm so stupid, I can't believe I never noticed them before, on all of them!:cry::cry:

I just did a forum search and saw that it isn't always sore hocks, sometimes it's just a bit of hardened skin, how am I supposed to tell which it is?:(

First of all, chill. You are an amazzzzzzing bunny mum and I know this from your videos :p

The only thing I can think of that has caused it, is the fact that you have a lot of concrete slabs in your set up. Benji has pretty sore feet but they seem to cause him no trouble, I find that lots of time on the grass, vet bed, foam mats and keeping his living area very clean seems to do the job.

Hope it's just a bit of hard skin on their feet though:wave:

Thank you.

Thanks Chloe.:)
Yes, I was thinking that too. I don't think they are causing any of them any pain, they don't flinch at all when I touch the reddy parts. I'm going to trim all their nails (I read somewhere sometimes when their nails are to long it can cause slight sore hocks) today and put some fleece and vetbed down and see how they go for a few days, if they get any worse we will be off to the vet, if they stay the same I'll keep on watching for a bit longer, but hopefully they might get a bit better, or even better not even be sore hocks at all.:)
