Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Blood Test Questions

Could someone who has had blood tests done on their rabbit please help me with some queries...
I assume the blood test is done via a vein in the ear? If this is correct does the rabbit have to be sedated to have this done, or do Vets tend to try & do it when the rabbit is awake?
What sort of thing will my Vet be looking for/testing for with the bloods?
How long does it usually take to get results back?

Sorry for all the questions but Dylan may have to have bloods done in a couple of weeks time if he has lost any more weight (he has recently lost 0.04kg/1oz) & is slim to start with so he can't afford to lose anymore. I'm trying not to fret but obviously am worried by the weight loss & what may be happening internally or not :?

Alvin was awake and they took blood from his leg, it was shaved a little tho.

i think it took about a week for the results. Alvins blood was testing to see if there was any sign of infections, the way his organs were functioning.. it was a very general one to see why he kept having stasis.

when it all came back clear he had a separate test done for EC.

Mine have always been awake (unless they were under a GA already), and had it taken from the ear but Cloud did come back with a shaved neck, although they didn't take any blood from it. It presume they were looking for a vein and couldn't find a better one.

Mine came back that day or the next day (depending on the time the bloods were taken) and the ones that were complex and had to be sent off came back a bit later.
