  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Skinny, moulty bunnies

Anyone's moulting bunnies gone rather skinny?

Sophie and Artie are my 'fluffy' bunnies, and they seem really skinny at the minute!

Would I be wise to give them a bit extra to nibble on, to help them in their moult?

Yes! Benji is having a big moult and feels very very skinny in the last week. However, he's also recently bonded and so it may be that his wifey is eating his share of the food. I've been feeding them separately just in case and I've been giving him a bit extra:)

It does take extra protein to grow new fur so you could temporarily increase pellets slightly. Are you sure they are actually skinnier though - try weighing them. Whilst the new fur is growing in it's shorter which can make it look like they are more skinny than they are as you can see the outline of their body that would usually be rounded off by the fluff.

I thought Spenser had lost a lot of weight, but when I asked the vet to weigh him last week he was only marginally down on when he was eighed last in April. He's a lionhead cross and had grown an awful lot of extra fur over the very cold winter of last year.

So glad you posted this as I was starting to worry about Tilly who seems skinny at the moment. She's just had a major moult and a bonding so this has put my mind at rest thanks:D Just to be doubly sure we have a vet appointment anyway this week so I'll get her weight checked :)

I can feel breast bone, they are definately skinnier, and artie has recently went through a bond too, think I might up pellets for a few days see if there is a noticable difference

daisy is short haired so no problem but both topsy and whiskey are shedding giant chunks, i sit there pulling it out lol, theyve never moulted this much before its huge. But yes they both seem skinnier and...smaller :?
