  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Hello there, fellow bunny owners.

Mandy-003.jpg

My bun Mandy (a 10 pound Cinnamon bun, with an unusually thick fur coat, she might look fat, but its 90% fur ) suffers from chronic stasis, and has been in constant stasis since November of last year.

For a month and a half now , she has been doing great with a daily dosis of injectable Metoclopramide (I am giving her the SubQ injections myself). She is getting one shot of 1mg a day, and this allows her to poop like a normal bunny.

We did try oral Cisapride and Metoclopramide, but it did very little, hence why we are doing the injections.

Now, we are looking at a life time treatment, and Metoclopramide affects the brain directly, making her go hyper for an hour or so, and I am truly afraid of messing her heart up...we are talking about 365 injections in a year...scary to just think about it.

Now...I saw in a thread in this forum, that some people were giving Domperidone to their buns...and I am willing to give it a try, so I can stop injecting her so often.

My vet isn't used to this drug, so any numbers you can give me, would be of great use :)

Thanks!

thumps_ would be the best person in my opinion to answer you on this, her bun, Thumper has been on domperidone for a very long time to counteract serious ileus/caecum issues

Has your Rabbit had any diagnostics to try to establish the actual cause of her GI tract issues ?

Yeah, we did a full study. Dental ok, Ultrasound came back ok...bloodwork ok...X-Rays ok and so on. Good diet...you name it.

So we are pretty much in the dark as what might be the real cause.

My vet thinks that since she got this so young (she is just over a year old) that it might be poor innervation in her gut and that we might just have to deal with the symptoms since the cause has no cure at all.
