  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Set of ear and nose symptoms, can you help?

Billy's had snuffles on and off for the past few months. Mostly it manifests in me finding him in the morning with a big cylinder of white snot emerging from one nostril. I wipe it off and keep pulling it and pulling it and it goes on for ages. He sneezes quite a bit too, but nothing to cause too much alarm.

He has been on a course of baytril which cleared up the initial snuffles and then they came back about 2 weeks later. The vet has put him on another, longer course of baytril at a higher dose and has said she will refer me to Great Western for an x-ray and and injectable penicillin (?) if it doesn't work

Anyway, she says she also suspects that he has some sort of damage in his nasal passages which give way to infection easily - maybe from being in the not-terribly-nice conditions of the Ledbury Pet Shop when he was first rescued by Teflons Shadow and Alice at Windwhistle. In my experience he also has a very sensitive face, his ears especially - they seem to hurt when I touch his nose and he makes a small little whimper, he also flinches his ears tightly back every time he swallows.

Obviously ears, nose and throat are very related -does anyone have a clue what this might be? Or do you agree with the vet?

What makes you think his ears hurt when you touch his nose? I'd be more inclined to think his nose hurts when you touch it.

He seems to flinch his ears a lot while making a sound. He'll whimper and his ears will go down. It's also just an intuitive thing - I feel as if I can tell that his ears hurt... I know it's not much to go on.

My Gypsy doesn't like her nose touched because of an infection in her nasal cavity, and will put her ears back if you do touch it.

It could be her ears that hurt, but equally bun ears are an indication of emotions/body language (like with horses), so pain in other areas could perhaps cause movements of the ear?

maybe it's that then... it's a sign of pain and he does it when I touch his cheeks and his nose...

eric's really protective of his nose (whats left of it!) moreso because its sooo sensitive/scarred now rather than sore.
odd you should mention the ears tho - eric loves having his left one rubbed and scratched but i can never tickle the right one in the same way without him tilting his head in a peculiar way:?

i hope billy will be ok xxx

Poor Billy. If you didn't want to take him all the way to the specialist it may be worth speaking to Garry or Katherine when she comes back. They have done all xrays and nasal swabs twice for Frankie in conjunction with a specialist in Bristol

Katherine also treated Merlin for snuffles when I first had him. Touchwood doesn't have any episodes now.
