  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Myxi Vaccination - how long does it last, if not boosted?

As title, anyone?

And does it have a dropoff period, eg, 100% effective at 0-6months, 50% effective at 7-8months, 0-50% 8months+ or anything like that?

Just a thought :)

My vets only do them yearly. They say not necessary for every 6 months. I just hope they are right!

They are wrong - get them to read the information that comes with the vaccine - and also remind your vet that mozzies etc are carriers so that even urban and indoor buns are at risk.

Isn't it worrying that there are differences in opinions between vets, even with all the information out there?

To be fair, the datasheet doesn't actually say vaccination should be every 6 mths - it recommends annually in May/June or 6 mthly in high risk areas, so the vet could well have read the datasheet and decided they were low risk.

In the present state of knowledge no firm recommendation for revaccination frequency can be made but it is suggested that animals should be revaccinated annually in May/June just prior to the myxomatosis season as most myxomatosis in Britain occurs in late summer, autumn and early winter months. Where there is high risk of myxomatosis infection revaccination every six months is suggested.

Having said that, I'm not sure how you decide whether you are in a high risk area though and have always vaccinated 6 mthly.

Yes, exactly this. I spoke to my vet about this before deciding my options. As I dislike vaccinating anyway, this was a good option.
