  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Sore eye

One of my 3 rabbits has a 'sore' eye: looks very uncomfortable and I can see it's bloodshot when I pull his lid. I have bathed in boiled salt water but will obviously need to get him to the vet. I wonder whether one of my other rabbits has bullied him as, although very big, he's very timid. Can't decide whether I would be better off going to my vet in village, 2 mins away, tomorrow, or whether he needs to see my rabbit-savvy vet = about 3/4 hour away. I obviously want to do my best for him and wonder whether this is something local vet would be ok for or do the much more stressful 3/4 hour car journey. (I have two males, 1 female, all neutered, which kind of works most of the time but my other boy - a half-wildie - is very domineering)

Sorry your bun has a sore eye:(
I would personally go to the local vet in the village.. As you say, saves on stress only being 2 mins away.. you can always go to the other one if youre not happy with their diagnosis/treatment.
Have you used them before?
