I really need some advice on Degu health. I noticed my degu, Angel, bleeding from her ear last night. There was a relatively large ammount of blood and her ear seemed tender to touch. I cleaned it with warm water and i could see a lot of blood blocking her ear cannal when I shined a torch down it.
She has had serious tooth misalignment problems with her back molars and is syringe fed multiple times a day. I think she eats occasionally when I'm not there as her faeces and other teeth are healthy and i doubt they would be if she wasn't eating hay... but this week she has lost weight (although her teeth were trimmed recently) and doesn't seem herself. She's been aggressive towards her cage mates at meal times and has also been a bit less bouncy than usual. She also sounds a bit snuffley when breathing which she's never shown before
I took her to the vets this morning and, although the vet was nice, she just gave some baytril and didn't seem to know much about degus or have any idea what it could be. I am worried about an ear infection but there's no loss of balance (although there is a faint smell coming from her ear) and the discharge looked like all blood not pus. The vet couldn't see any signs of pus when she examined her either. Her brother died of a middle ear infection earlier this year and I really don't want to loose her too.
I was also concerned about her ear problem possibly being related to her teeth. I know that in rabbits the teeth wouldn't grow up into the ear canal but I'm wondering if anyone knows if it's a possibility in Degus. Her poorley ear is on the same side as her misaligned teeth and with the sudden snuffley nose too i can't help but be paranoid that her tooth roots have grown into her jaw
I feel so scared that I could lose her and she means the world to me. If anyone has any idea what this could be or has seen anything like this in their pets I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks a lot,
Em
