Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Update on poorly Rablsey

ZoeZo

Young Bun
Hello all, as I hijacked 'one of the familes' EC thread thought I'd put an update.

Slowly he had started to lose weight and generally not be himself, he had a couple of evenings over a couple of weeks where he wouldn't eat anything - then Thursday he looked wobbly on his back legs, so off to the vets Friday.

She didn't suspect EC, gave him Fibreplex, CC and now Baytril (as he had couple of days of soft poo's) I feel like I have a baby cleaning his bum and syringe feeding him!

Bloods came back today to say major organs generally seem ok, so keep him on the antibiotics, then possibly try anti inflammatories and Panacur then possible take more bloody for haematology.

I'm hoping he'll pick up soon, he seems a bit brighter already, thanks for listening!

I'm glad he is feeling brighter. I'm unfamiliar with what's gone on for him, but I hope he keeps improving :)

Thanks Sky, it's a case of ruling things out I guess, I can't pinpoint when he started not being himself, slowly he got to the state he was in on Thursday.

He's moulting quite a lot this year (chunks at a time) but also a bit dandruffy, so it could be mites too, he does seem irritated when you stroke his back (shoulders) and tries to clean when you touch him - can they cause them to feel so glum or even make them ill?

He's never been wormed either (lived outside until last year, now he's a full time house rabbit (he had his front teeth out last May so thought it too cold to be outside now he 6 1/2)

He had a bit of soft poo again this morning, but that could've been the pineapple juice I mixed the CC with? He smells a bit funny between his legs too, so it could be urine infection?! (wee normal colour) it's a lot of could be's as the blood tests didn't give anything conclusive

Can't believe it's only three weeks since started treating Rabs - he doesn't seem much better to me, his fur is better and he's not so bad on his back legs, but over the last week he's been having huge clumps of soft poo, i've had to wash his bum quite a few evenings, last week the vet gave Fibreplex, he's had a course of Panacure too

He feels a good weight, but his back and 'hip' bones feel boney, the vet couldn't feel any lumps, and his teeth ok, he eats loads! Last two days he just lays in his hutch and seem energyless :( before he'd be jumping up and down from the sofa

Still tries to recoil when you touch his back and lick/scratch if touched/stroked - ANY ideas anyone! :(

So sorry to hear about your poorly bun  I'm not familiar with his history either, but he does sound quite a bit poorly still doesn't he. Have the vets suggested any further investigations?

His sensitive back combined with his loss of balance at the outset may indicate that an Xray is needed, they could check his teeth properly at the same time. Are you still syringe feeding him? If so he may not be up to a GA just yet :? Is he on pain meds at all?
Did you get any mite treatment? Normally mites are a symptom of bun being poorly not the other way around.
Perhaps an exotics referral would be the sensible next step for your vet either directly or by email/fax?

Thanks for your reply, he hasn't has any pain meds yet, I know it's stupid but I've stopped with the CC syringe feeding for now, but am going to start up again, it's just because he hates it but we know its for his own good.

His teeth are good, he's been x-rayed when he had his tear ducts flushed (plus he had his incisors removed last year and they kept overgrowing all of a sudden became misaligned) until now he's been a happy healthy bun, apart from one snuffles almost a year ago

I do think he needs to go back for perhaps an x-ray further investigation, think I'm scared what it'll show up :(
