  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Catch 22? - buprenorphine to reduce pain?

Lynn's Bunny

Mama Doe
My rabbit has been prescribed buprenorphine for pain following his neuter. He is also on meloxicam. He was in a lot of pain so the Vet added in the buprenorphine to help. But now I'm reading that a side effect is not eating and that is his main problem.

He only ate a bit of apple this morning. There are some small poops and some cecotrophs. He is very lethargic. he also has very little appetite. He was at the vets yesterday 2 x. the Second time he wnet they force fed him critical care. I tried to do taht this morning with no luck. he just spat it out.

I feel like this is a catch 22. If I don't give him pain meds he'll not eat for he'll be in pain. If I give him the meds he wont' eat as he is too tired and has no appetite.

ARUGH! I don't know what to do and I'm soo worried. Please help!

I would contact the Vet again. We cannot advise you to stop the Buprenorphine, only the prescribing Vet can do that

Good luck

Hi,

I called another Vet for a second opinion and she advised having him hospitalized for the day to be forcfed and monitored closer. So I called the Vet back and asked them if they can do this and they said yes bring him in. So he's back at the Vets until 5:30pm today and then he'll go back agian tomorrow if he's not eating properly. Poor billie.

I think hospitalisation is the best thing for him just now.
Please let us know how he is when you collect him xx

It does sound like this is the best option. I have been reluctant to hospitalise my animals in the past thinking that the stress of a different environment could do more harm than good but they really are better off under professional care when they're this poorly.

Will be thinking of you and Billie, let us know how he gets on
