Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

HELP! Not eating but still popping!

AshnGrace

Young Bun
Ok panic.... I put food out for him at 7am and hes not touched any of the pellets or timothy hay ate some apple and a mini carrot didnt eat much of the pellets yesterday either. Hes still popping everywhere and running around like a mad rabbit (I.e fast forward speed run---then stop---fast forward speed run and jump on couch!). Is he ill?

It sounds like the beginning of a gut slow down, can you perswade him to eat anything? If you can not get enough in to him tonight he will need to see the vets for the diagnosis to rule out a blockage (although this is unlikely if he is still pooping) and for a gut stimulant.

If his eating habits have changed, then you're right to ask. Does he have a history of teeth problems?

Yeah hes eating treats! Had one very small piece of dried banana and one russel rabbit carrot cruncher. I need to get more fresh veg tomorrow for him hes very fussy about it having to be fresh. What would be for him to eat? And no history of teeth issues refuses to chew his chew toys, hes 14wks old. if he was having digestive issues wouldnt he be sitting still? found two sloppy poos one today one yesterday. What should i do?

In all honesty I would be inclined to take him to the vets tomorrow just to be on the safe side, obviously if he stops eating overnight it is an emergency and he should be taken straight away!
What veg does he normaly eat?

ahhh i put fresh food on the floor and hes eating it...........still go to vets?
he has spinach (a lil bit) watercress a lil carrot and sometimes apple.

Trying to catch him to look at his teeth is clearly distressing him. So not doing that!

You're more likely to see a damp chin - you'll not be able to check his back teeth yourself.
I think definitely a trip to the vet for a health check.

Monitor him very closley over night and make sure he continues to eat.
If he does then it is up to you whether you think it would be best to get him checked out and have his teeth looked at to at least rule that out.
Spinach is not very good for bunnies on a regular basis as it can overtime become toxic, watercress is fine if they tolerate it but not the best thing as it does not really have any nutritional value to it, carrot again should only be used as a treat- it is very high in sugar which can upset the gut flora, fruit of any kind should be fed rarely in my opinion, again due to the sugar content but also because it is not needed in a bunnies diet and can also cause obiesity.

What we feed are a mixture of this between- Dandelion leaves, Bramble leaves (Blackberry), Basil, Mint, Parsley, Spring Greens and Home grown Timothy Grass.

Ok ill Change his diet again. I dont have any danelions in my garden so i have to collect them from local parks in london. (but then i dont know if they use anything to treat the local parks).

Hes got some fight in him as he just beat me silly as i tryed to get him back in his cage so i can monitor how much he eats, hes still drinking will call the vets in the morning.

Thanks for your advice everyone much appreciated.

I would not advise you to pick them from somewhere if you are not sure they havent been treated!
Also be sure to change his diet SLOWLEY!! No sudden changes.

Okay so went to the Vets today... they checked his teeth no problems there. So he thinks it might of been statsis. Two injections later and some power to put in his water.....hes eating a very small amount now. Given he spends the day running around the house and demanding attention from my partner, he normally eats in the morning and the evening. ~ The thing I wonder is with the power you put into their water to the vets calculate that they might not actually drink the full 50ml of it? Given all water bottles drip slightly....

(Overall I wonder if Ash now feels relieved, because it cost alot to get him treated he gets to wait another month until i can afford to neuter him)!

Sometimes it is best if you can, syringe the water/powder solution in to him throughout the day.
You need to be sure that the bun still drinks or he will become dehydrated.
When Jims has been given the powder he will not touch the water so keep a look out.
Keep tempting him with lots of yummy foods and hay to keep his tummy going.
He may need to go back for a repeat of the meds tomorrow if he is still not eating normally.

Offer him a water from a bowl rather than a bottle.
Most Rabbits will drink more from a bowl than from a bottle.

I agree that you should try a water bowl - a wide based one that is on the heavy side if you have it. Bunnies love to tip their water bowls if they can!
And lots of hay!
