  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Low calcium levels

A diet lacking in calcium, especially if there is also a lack of vitamin D
Diarrhoea
Pregnancy and lactation

There are other possibilities but they would involve other blood biochemistry abnormalities.

Then there is the fact that there needs to be a distinction between Total Calcium and Ionized Calcium levels I think :?

Bone density would be adversely effected and Dental Disease would be likely to occur.

Thanks Jane:love:.
Part of me is confused:? She has the same diet as the other buns. Mainly hay, a handfull of excell light pellets so she doesn't selectively eat, and greens. They aren't outside every day but whenever it is dry. Her poos are normal and she is neutered. She had FBC, LFTs and renal tests and all other results were normal. I didn't have a clue about the different calciums . . .must ask.
The reason she was tested was that she is drinking and weeing alot.
Some of it does make sense now though as she does have dental disease and is being treated for arthritis:(
None of that can be further investigated though yet because the vet said there was a link between adverse effects of anaestheteics and low calcium levels:shock:
The vet thinks it's very interesting. . . I'm just worried.
With everything we learn more but it's always the buns who suffer when as learn.
