  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

For those not members of the RWA or who do not receive their First Alert E-mail bulletins Please read

"Further reports have been received this week of outbreaks of myxomatosis in pet rabbits in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. RWA/F member Jill Wildgoose has e mailed this morning to advise that 50 dead wild rabbits were found within a half mile area in the Derwent Valley and Peak District area of South Yorkshire this week. It is feared that the outbreak could kill many more.

No doubt members are very much aware of the dangers of this dreadful disease and the need to vaccinate on a 6 monthly basis. However, each month new rabbit owners join the association and the first alert service, so we would like to advise them to ensure that their bunnies vaccinations are up to date. Please remind everyone who owns a rabbit and also remind them that an annual vaccination for Viral Haemorrhagic Disease (VHD or HVD) is just as important . Vaccinations protect lives.

Rabbits can be vaccinated against myxomatosis from 6 weeks of age and for VHD, anytime berween 10-12 weeks. The UK vaccines are not licensed for use together : The manufacturers advise a 14 day gap."

This is important for all and not just in these areas - a reminder that all bunnies should be vaccinated against both Myxo and VHD. With this weather the biting insects that transmit myxo are out in force. Please don't take a chance.
