  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Persistent Eye infection--Pasturella?

Help please anyone!!! Treating eye infection- and EC-

The short question-- Has anyone had experience of eye infection with white gloopy discharge-- how long to treat before we can expect result?

we treated with Tiacil and Baytril for 9 days til clear, and then stopped meds. 5 days later it was back and new course of Tiacil drops and Baytril started. Today, 7th day, slight improvement but still a bit goopy and eye it started in still partly closed. Thank you Jacks-Jane for your reply on another thread. As you mentioned, we don't want to start and stop Baytril ,so are thinking we should go on til clear and for at least 14 days ? this time.

(Vet not very proactive and not terribly hygienic- but NO CHOICE-- Bandit can't travel far. )

I understand that eye infections can be very serious but vet squeezed tearducts and they weren't blocked-- also flouriscein came out nose when she dropped it in eye to examine. Bandit is about 9 and gets very stressed from handling, or going to vet, so we have ruled out any non-essential visits to or interventions by vet..Vet is open to suggestions, and will renew recent meds by phone. This forum has helped greatly re the EC, metacam, Baytril etc.

Bandit is also on Fibreplex, and Zantac for his hard stringy poos.

A forum member has said Baytril should work against Pasturella, but one member said 'azithromycin,,zithromax is most effective against pasturella' but writes from USA. We don't know if it IS Pasturella, and culturing a swab means more visits to vet. (Examining table was filthy one visit-- we didn't notice til after Bandit went back in his carrier. Dog footprints and smears. This whole saga-- EC, then eye infection, started with a tooth rasp 2 months ago. But he is eating grass well now and wobbly legs much better and he is quite active.)

We are very sad about Bandit and would be so grateful for any information about the experience of others on the forum.

Thank you all the website is excellent with so many helpful supportive and informative posts. Shebunkin
