  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

VHD reaction

Dazzle had her VHD jab wed before bank hol and on bank hol mon I noticed she was off colour and noticed a wound on her back. First thought it could have been Razzle being a bit TOO friendly!!!!! what with the sun and new grass. I've never seen them fight, so I didn't consider that. Kept a close eye but the last day or so she seems to have lost more fur around the area. Took her to the vets and she said it was an allergy to the HVD vaccine and not to worry as this means she has a good immunity to the disease. has anyone eles had this? If it is a reaction is it gonna happen again next year? Greatful for any feed back:?

I suspect the vet used the CYLAP VHD Vaccine which is well known for causing numerous adverse reactions.
Personally I'd request the LAPINJECT VHD Vaccine in future.

The skin reaction is not necessarily an indication of a good immune response and infact it (the skin reaction) can be widespread and painful. I would not say that it was normal or desirable and I'd want to minimise the risk of it happening again in the future.
