  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Abscess at base of ear? (w/pic)

Saffy has a new bald spot at the base of one of her lop ears, on the top of her head. The skin looks a little pink and a bit swollen. I tried to get a better look at it and feel to be sure there is swelling but she does not care to have it touched, which makes me think it's hurting her. Now, she is perfectly normal otherwise-great appetite and whatnot-but obviously there is a problem.
Why these things have to happen on a :censored: weekend when bunny vets are impossible to be found, I just don't know! Will she be fine, I wonder, to wait to see her proper vet on Monday morning, or should I look for an emerg bunny vet asap? (Monday morning is at least 27 hours away here in Canada)

(best I could do for a pic) That's the base of her right ear. Lloyd was just grooming the area and all the fur was pushed aside.

It may be an abscess but its impossible to tell from the photo.
As long as she is eating and pooing and not tilting her head to one side then she should be OK til you can get her to the Vet first thing tomorrow.

Saffy is fine! The vet said it looks like a tuft of hair that got pulled out by her husbun during grooming or something minor like that. I mistook the area for being swollen because of the ear cartilage there.
I'm such a worry-wart! I'd rather worry and have her cared for properly than not, though! I LOVE my bunnies!
