  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Unexplained weight loss

Cherry is having another bout of weight loss, but the vet can't explain it. not her teeth, all blood and urine came back clear before christmas.

She was nippy when I picked her up and has been on a few occasions before, always when I pick her up. But only 3 occasions since getting her in August.

I spoke to liz on Friday and I am going to worm her starting tonight. I will speak to the vet tomorrow about pain relief, and see if that has any influence. I do wonder if it is tooth related, even if its not

I am at a loss, if the vet can't put their finger on it what hope have I.

On top of all that she is having a scruffy moult, but on the up side, she is clear of mites :)

I feel for you too - one of my buns has lost weight rapidly for no apparent reason. She's off to the vet's tomorrow as she is eating and drinking normally but skin and bones. She hasn't had a blood test or sample yet so it could be something. I hope you get to the bottom of yours and she improves. Buns are such a worry...

Alfie lost a lot of weight very fast last year. He was put on baytril & metacam straight away, & the vet did find a small ulcer in his mouth, which may have been causing him to eat slower. He's in a group, so it's everybun for themselves at feed time - I wondered if slow eating meant he didn't get enough. He had blood & urine tests at the time. He tested negative for EC & his kidneys were functioning normally. He was panacured for 6 weeks anyway.

I didn't expect him to survive - he literally shrank to nothing within a few days. I separated him & his daughter & they came into a warm room, & were fed every few hours until he started to gain weight.

I still don't know what caused it. This winter he's maintained his weight well (I weigh him 3 times a week), but the bun rooms are warmer now & he gets a separate food pile:D
