  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Arthritis - advice appreciated

Herbert

Young Bun
Back to this great forum again for some advice!

Noticed that Herbert's front left leg was splaying slightly on slippery surfaces and after an examination he has been diagnosed with arthritis. Not too much of a surprise as he is an elderly gentleman (had him for 8 and a half years but he is a rescue rabbit so possibly another 2 or more years on top of that.)

He is on Metacam as and when needed, however, I was wondering whether there is anything else I can do to make life easier for him, ie. exercise, massage, other medications to consider etc? I've read that cod liver oil on food helps but not sure about this?

Anyway, would be grateful to hear from others who have experience caring for arthritic bunnies.

Thanks in advance. x

My Vet is giving acupuncture to one of my arthritic Buns and it is helping her.

Some people have also found Glucosomine to be beneficial

My vet practices acupuncture so I'm sure this will be a suggestion if things get worse for Herbert. I'm lucky to have finally found a rabbit savvy vet!

How would I administer the glucosomine and is it OK to take with the Metacam? As always, thanks for the advice.

I would speak with the Vet about Glucosomine before administering it. I have not used it myself but I believe a few folk on here have :)

My buns have been on glucosamine all of their lives - cos one had calcium sludge issues and the glucosamine helps to rebuild the bladder wall, he passed away but I've continued to give it to the others. The one who died got to 10 and a half years old, and was still spritely as anything, I think it was a lifetime of glucosamine.

My vet has always assured me that its just like us taking a vitamin supplement (infact my mum takes it for her arthritis). I used Cystaid or Cystease, its for cats, see http://www.vetuk.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=747. It comes in sprinkle capsules and I just sprinkle it on their food every day.
