Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Who says Panacur for 28 days?

Hi, I know there have been a number of Panacur questions lately but here's another!

My bunnies have been away boarding and I intended to Panacur them for 28 days once they had settled back in at home.

I rang and ordered the Panacur from my usual vets and although I told the pharmacist I would need 4 tubes (enough for a 28 day course for 2 rabbits) they only dispensed 2, 1 for each bunny which would be enough, given their weight for 18 days each. I said I needed 2 more which they eventually dispensed reluctantly. They said I only need do 9 days as thats what the makers recommend, I said the current thinking was to do 28 days and not to do 9 days 3 or 4 times annually - she asked who told you that? I didn't like to say you guys on the forum:oops: in case she thought I was a crazy or that another vet, Guy Carter at Medivet told me when I got their "summer special" VHD vaccs done there!

In the end I muttered something about rabbit experts and annual conferences and that I could just get them online if she'd rather - she got the rest dispensed and said they couldn't advise it but if I wanted to do 28 days that was up to me. She was nice about it but reluctant all the same.

So please, what should I have said, what documentation can I enlighten them with?

It was discussed at length at the RWA conference if thats any help. You could always buy the lecture notes and give her a copy

That what Guy Carter must have been talking about - I remember he mentioned a conference but my mind went a blank, it doesn't take much! - I was just trying not to say "Everyone on RU says so!"

I looked on the Panacur manufacturers site and it does still say 9 days so looking for concrete proof that I'm not just a crazy.

Thanks Liz thats helpful.

I know at least one of our vets (exotic specialist) has attended the conference in the past, perhaps he always does I don't know but the information doesn't always get filtered down does it? As I said Guy Carter certainly told me it is now recommended to do a one off 28 days and only to repeat if new buns introduces or buns go boarding but didn't want to mention his name at the other vets where I've been going for about 30 years!

I think in future I'll just get my panacur from Vetuk if I need it!

In the box of Panacur I got yesterday, it says on the leaflet that comes in the box to do a 28 day course if there is an EC infection. I can always scan it and email it to you if need be
