Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Hello, how is everyone?

I have always given my bunnies papaya tablets but from where i have got then through the price has gone up considerably! Is it tablets that i need to give them or is anything else ok? Of course i will buy them if thats what needed, but i just wanted to check!!

Sharon Kilfoyle and Lesley Samson's book 'Completely Angora' has a fair bit about papaya, and I think they conducted some tests with their buns.

They concluded tablet form of papaya had ltitle or no effect - unless you give the buns a LOT of tablets. They said that dried papaya - or fresh if you can get it - is much more effective. I'm not sure the concentration of enzymes is high enough in tablets. I managed to find a source of dried papaya that is pure - no added sugar as in some dried fruits - and that seems cheaper to give in small quantities, than the tablets were. Plus the buns enjoy it more.:D

But don't give up on it as it is definitely a powerful preventive for wool block!

Not sure where you get yours from but I use the Holland and Barrett papaya enzyme tablets, as recommended to me sometime ago on here!

Thank you both for your responses. Where do you get the dried papaya from?

How much do the tablests from holland and barret cost please?

I used to give my two bromelain tablets and my vet said that because of all the bulking agents they put into tablets it can cause other health problems. She told me to give my two fresh pineapple and it definitely does help them.

I only really give it when they are moulting. To start with I just cut up one smallish chunk and then I built it up gradually. I usually buy a small pack of it from waitrose and give it once in the evening, once the next morning and once the following evening (as they say to use it in 24 hours once opened).

I don't think it would be good to give it all the time as it's probably got quite a lot of sugar in it.
