Bunny not eating cecotrophs?!!!

SarahGonzales

Young Bun
I have a new 8 week old bunny. He is very happy at home, however he is not eating his cecotrophs. He has just started antibiotics for the snuffles - could this be why?

Has anyone else encountered this problem??

Antibiotics can upset the caecal flora and kill off the good bacteria that bunny needs to ferment the food, consequently the caecum gets out of balance and bunny often produces too many caecotrophs. On top of this they often smell or taste wrong so get discarded. Bunnies on antibiotics should always be given a probiotic supplement to replace the beneficial bacteria lost at the same time as the antibiotic. I recommmend Fibreplex, but you can also get biolapis and Avipro etc..
Diets too rich in starch/carbohydrate and too low in fibre can also cause this.
