  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

What do fleas look like?

I know this sound ridiculous but I'm not sure if Casper has them.

He has a few minute brown flecks round his hind quaters. None of the other buns have any. I stared at them so long I'm not really sure if one moved or if it was my imagination.

I bathed him with a mite/flea shampoo just incase.

i don't think buns get them I think they only get lice which would be brown I guess, fleas are black and jump

If they are lice whats the best treatment? Also should I treat his partner aswell? He is a double lionhead, she is a mini rex.

Buns do get fleas, and mites and lice..

Fleas are visible, and very flat so hard to squash, they are brown/black and move quickly! Lice are smaller, look like black flecks. Fleas can also bite you so if you have itchy bites it could be fleas

yes, buns catch all biting insects like any other mammals....particularly now that the weather is warming up...

yeah I think medicated shampoo will help and yes I would do the partner just to be safe but check him first. If it was mites you wouldn't see them and the only cure is ivermectin, but I'm really sure this is lice.

Can you brush or pick any of them off? If you can put them on a white piece of paper and put a spot of water on them. If the water goes red then they're fleas.
